How to apply for NHS
National Honor Society is based on four tennents:  Leadership, Scholarship, Character and Service.
All of these things play a role in determining your eligibility.  Most importantly work hard to maintain a strong GPA all four years and strive to be of service to your community and school.

Step 1 :  January-Mid February
To be eligible to receive an application you must have maintained a GPA of 4.3 or above through the first semester of your junior year.   After finals in January, the sponsor receives a list of eligible candidates.  Labels and copies of the application must be generated and organized for distribution to students' 2nd or 3rd period classes.  Most applications are delivered by the 2nd week in February.  If you feel your student is eligible but has not received an application by this time please contact the sponsor to check on your individual case.

Step 2:  Mid-February - Mid-March
Once the student has their application, it is their job to turn it in completed by the due date listed on the application.  No late applications are accepted!  In addition to filling out their membership information packet they must solicit 4 teacher or coach recommendations.  These are forms that the teacher or coach must fill out and return to the sponsor.  It is critical that these forms are delivered to the teacher/coach in a timely fashion so they will have time to fill them out and return them.  AGAIN- IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO MAKE SURE ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS ARE TURNED IN ON OR BEFORE THE DUE DATE INDICATED.  NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Step 3:  Before Spring Break
Faculty members rank candidates in leadership and character.  Then, candidates are ranked in the service category by the sponsor based on previous hours of volunteer service completed.   A composite score for each student is then generated.  Lists of each student's composite score are prepared by the sponsor for distribution to the faculty council during the membership meeting.  The sponsor reviews all applications.

Step 4:  Before Spring Break
The faculty council meets to vote on the new membership.  Once the list of new members is established, acceptance and rejection letters are mailed home.  If accepted, your letter will contain the induction ceremony details.  During the month of April the $10 dues fee must be turned in by the student prior to being inducted.  (Please see the sponsor or the Principal if this presents a problem.)

Step 5:  Induction Ceremony

Step 6:  First Meeting of new members in May
About the third week in May all new members should plan on attending their first meeting where officers will be elected for the following year.
