Through the creative process of the Fine Arts, students learn to be expressive visual communica- tors, expand their views and artistic skills, gain an appreciation for past and present cultures and find a voice. Each of the following art courses earns 1/2 unit of credit and fulfills the Cultural Education graduation requirement. Two years of art, four courses, fulfills the entrance requirement for most Il- linois state schools. Check the school’s admissions web pages for complete information. Each Art course requires a $25 fee per semester. INTRO TO ART Fr., So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None This introductory course is a recommended entry level course for all students who have an interest in art. The main emphasis will be on the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. The student will have an opportunity to explore a wide variety of media, application of design, basic drawing
techniques, and both 2-D and 3-D design. This course is a prerequisite for more advanced art courses. ART 2 Fr., So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Intro to Art The second semester of the foundation course provides experiences in sculpture, print-making, jewelry and computers. It will provide an in-depth study of various techniques and media, with an emphasis on how to create original designs. Besides the increased exposure to a variety of areas, this course
prepares students for advanced work such as drawing, painting, and graphic design. SKETCHING So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None (Intro to Art is suggested) Students explore drawing as an art form on various surfaces as well as a wide range of drawing media. Basic drawing techniques and proper use of drawing tools will be taught. This course emphasizes the organization of surfaces and creative image making, as well as a unit on portraiture. DRAWING AND PAINTING So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Intro to Art and Sketching This course introduces the student to the various media and techniques in the fields of drawing and painting. The course stresses the importance of drawing as the foundation for all serious development and expression in art. The student works in pencil, pen and ink, pastels,
charcoal, watercolors, and acrylic paint. Accuracy of image is stressed as well as expressiveness and composition. Various styles of drawing and painting are explored. GRAPHIC DESIGN 1 So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Intro to Art This course will develop the student's technical knowledge of Graphic Design as applied to advertising, illustration, lettering and packaging. It will include logos, font design, and other processes relating to the graphic design field, using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. GRAPHIC DESIGN 2 So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Grade of "C" or better in Graphic Design I This course will continue to develop the student's technical knowledge of Graphic Design as applied to advertising, illustration, lettering, and design. Projects will include illustration, CD covers, computer graphics and other processes relating to the
graphic design field. Careers relating to graphic design will be explored. CERAMICS 1 and 2 Fr., So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None, Intro to Art is highly recommended This course is offered for the student who is interested in the three dimensional aspects of art. It is designed for the beginning potter as a general introduction to working with clay. This class features basic techniques for hand built pottery, pinch, coil, slab.
Decorating and glazing techniques will be explored. Students will produce hand built pottery as well as sculptural work. PHOTOGRAPHY 1 Fr., So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None, Intro to Art is highly recommended. Students must have an adjustable 35 mm camera and are responsible for purchasing their own photographic paper and film. Polaroid, Auto Focus, and Pocket size cameras cannot be used. Photo 1 explores black and white film processing, printing, finishing, and display.
Handling the camera, correct exposures and composition will be covered. Previous art background is recommended, (Art 1) since compositional arrangement and subject matter are stressed. PHOTOGRAPHY 2 So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Grade of "C" or better in Photography 1 Photo 2 builds upon the techniques of Photo 1 and extends them to include various types of advanced camera and film, hand toning and coloring techniques, print manipulation and more. The course will include digital camera, scanning, and Adobe® Photoshop®. Career
opportunities will be discussed, explored, and practiced to aid those considering photography as a vocation. Students are eligible for college of DuPage credit. Students must have an adjustable 35 mm or 2 1/4” camera with metering capabilities. INDEPENDENT STUDY So., Jr., Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit (1 year 1 credit) Prerequisite: Intro to Art, Art 2, Sketching or at least one semester in one of the above specialized areas, such as Ceramics or Photography. Independent Study is for the highly motivated art/photography/ceramics student. Upon approval of the instructor, department chairperson, and counselor a student may
continue in a field of specialization on an independent basis. He/she will be required to submit a plan of study, have a one-artist show in school, and submit the results of a research project (written or visual). This independent work can be planned to prepare the portfolio requirements for the student who is interested in taking the Advanced Placement Exam in College Studio Art or Drawing. STUDIO ART AP Jr. Sr. 1/2 year 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Intro to Art, Sketching, Drawing and Painting, Art 2 are recommended and Approval of Instructor. Studio Art is an Advanced Placement Program intended for the highly motivated student interested in the serious study of art. Throughout the program "quality" work will be used as a criterion of evaluation.
Students will be concerned with an in-depth concentration as well as broad explorations of specific artistic problems. Projects may be in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, and/or printmaking. A portfolio will be a requirement of this course. This course may be repeated more than one time for credit. |
